The 2014 summer transfer window has now closed. 
It was expected to be an explosive, record-breaking seven weeks of transfers and certainly didn’t disappoint.

Though Nigerian players were not involved in as many groundbreaking or upscale moves as some had expected, especially those who featured in Brazil, many did make moves over the course of the transfer window.

In this feature, we round-up the Nigerian players who were involved in this summer’s transfer window.


Kenneth Omeruo to Middlebrough
Nigeria international defender Kenneth Omeruo returned to Championship side Middlebrough for a second consecutive season-long loan spell from Chelsea.

The 20-year-old, who featured for the Super Eagles at the World Cup, was expected to remain in the English Premier League following his impressive display at the World Cup but Jose Mourinho had other ideas.

Omeruo should at least benefit from a full-season of first-team English football, albeit in the second tier.
Tom Adeyemi to Cardiff City
The Norwich-born midfielder sealed a move to Championship side Cardiff after handing in a transfer request, which was initially rejected, at Birmingham City.

The Bluebirds signed the 22-year-old for an undisclosed fee.

Adeyemi’s international future is not yet certain as he is eligible to play for Nigeria or England but is yet to feature for either side.


Shola Ameobi to Gaziantep Buyuksehir Belediyespor
Nigeria international striker Shola Ameobi, a free agent, signed a one-year deal with Turkish second division side Gaziantep.

The 32-year-old was released by Newcastle United in May, bringing an end to a 14-year relationship having amassed over 350 appearances, and scoring 79 goals.

The striker has been a late-burner at international level, only featuring for the national side in the last 18 months. He featured in Brazil but has been overlooked for the latest Super Eagles squad. One suspects that a move to the Turkish second tier may spell the end of his Nigeria career.

Imoh Ezekiel to Al Arabi
20-year-old Imoh Ezekiel, who has been capped once by Nigeria, moved to Qatar to join Al Arabi SC for a fee believed to be around 8 million Euros.

The former Standard Liege forward was a hit in Belgium where he bagged 29 goals in 79 appearances before moving the Qatari Stars League.

There have been questions about the player’s ambition, following a move away from the central narratives of European football, and it remains to be seen how Keshi will respond to the striker’s move.



Brown Ideye to West Bromwich Albion
West Bromwich Albion broke their club transfer record to sign Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kyiv in a £10 million deal.

The forward, who can play as a lone striker or in a wider position, made his full debut for the Baggies in a 3-0 defeat against Swansea over the weekend. Despite his slow start to life in England he has been back by manager Alan Irvine to come good.

He will need to—the Throstles have been tipped by many to struggle in the EPL this term.

Nnamdi Oduamadi to FC Crotone
The 23-year-old moved from parent club AC Milan to join Serie B side Crotone on a season-long loan deal. Oduamadi will spend his fifth consecutive loan spell in the Italian lower division in an attempt to convince the San Siro officials that he is ready to put on the famous Red and Black shirts.


Victor Moses to Stoke City
Nigerian winger Victor Moses joined Mark Hughes’s side on a season-long loan from parent club Chelsea.

The 23-year-old was looking to pin down a place at Stamford Bridge but was shipped out to the Britannia Stadium. Moses has made two impressive appearances for the Potters so far this season.

This campaign represents something of a make-or-break year for the forward. Despite his initial successes at international level, the former Crystal Palace man has gone off the boil.

He was a peripheral figure at the World Cup earlier this year and was largely anonymous on loan at Liverpool last season.
Odion Ighalo to Watford
Championship side Watford snapped up Odion Ighalo on loan from Serie A side Udinese as they seek promotion to the English Premier League. The former Julius Berger striker, who featured for Nigeria at U-20 level in 2009, is yet to feature for the Super Eagles.


Jordon Ibe to Derby County
The Rams, who narrowly missed out on gaining promotion to the EPL last season, signed the 18-year-old on a season-long loan. Ibe spent last season at another Championship side Birmingham and will be looking to continue his development at Pride Park this season.

The promising young player has struggled to break into Liverpool’s team after joining from Wycombe Wanderers in 2012.
Joseph Akpala to Karabukspor
Joseph Akpala signed a three-year deal with Turkish side Karabukspor where he spent half of last season on loan from German-based club Werder Bremen.

He joins the club permanently after a productive loan spell which saw him notch six goals to help the club gain European qualification.

He joins an ever-increasing stable of talented West African strikers in the Turkish Super Lig.



Macauley Chrisantus to Sivasspor
Another Nigerian who made what has now become a luxury move to Turkey is former U-17 FIFA World Cup top-scorer, Chrisantus Macauley.

The 23-year-old signed a three-year deal from Spanish second division side Las Palmas where he managed 20 goals in 67 appearances to join Turkey Super Lig outfit Sivasspor.

The forward will be hoping that the move can help to reignite a career that has largely struggled to live up to the heights once anticipated.
Abiola Dauda to Vitesse Arnhem
The Lagos-born forward, who also holds a Swedish citizenship, signed for Dutch side Vitesse on a three-year deal for a fee around €0.5 million from Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian SuperLiga.

He scored 15 in 31 league games for Red Star and will be hoping to maintain these ratios over in Holland.
Jonathan Obika to Swindon Town
Jon Obika was involved in a deadline-day switch to Swindon from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 23-year-old Spurs academy graduate signed a two-year contract the League One club for an undisclosed fee. He has spent most of his career on loan at different clubs including Crystal Palace, Peterborough and Charlton, but never managed to break into Spurs’ first team.

Despite featuring for England’s youth teams, he is eligible to play for Nigeria.
